Developing skills for the bioeconomy

BioBusiness Catalyst – Empowering Entrepreneurs for a Sustainable Bioeconomy connects organisations from Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa to strengthen vocational education and training in the bioeconomy. The project supports skills development for the sustainable use of biological resources, the conversion of waste into value-added products, and the creation of sustainable business initiatives.

The project begins with research into bioeconomy trends, labour market needs, and gaps in existing education programmes. These findings inform the development of a modular Bio-Based Product Technician curriculum, combining technical competences with circular economy principles, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.

Curriculum development is supported by teaching materials, practical exercises, and pilot training. The BioBusiness Lab digital platform will provide access to interactive educational content and support learning regardless of participants’ location. Particular attention is given to the inclusion of women, young people, and people with fewer opportunities.

The project also connects education providers, businesses, and policymakers through local meetings and the development of a bioeconomy support network. These activities aim to ensure the long-term use of project results, strengthen links between education and industry, and support employment opportunities in sustainable economic sectors.
