The Green Guard eLearning course is available: learn to spot greenwashing

The free online course “EcoTruth 101 – Decoding Greenwashing” is now available on the Green Guard project platform. It is made for anyone who wants to understand better how to spot misleading sustainability claims and to weigh critically the messages companies, organisations and brands use when they talk about “green” practice.

Greenwashing is an increasingly common problem. A great many promotional messages use words like “eco”, “sustainable”, “natural” or “climate neutral”, yet behind them there is not always clear evidence, real change or responsible business practice. That is exactly why it matters to build the knowledge and the skills that help citizens, young people, educators and organisations tell trustworthy information from marketing claims that can mislead consumers and the public.

The course EcoTruth 101 – Decoding Greenwashing introduces the basic ideas and mechanisms of greenwashing. It covers how to recognise misleading sustainability claims, why organisations and companies resort to greenwashing, and how such practice affects consumer trust and the wider public view of environmental responsibility. The course is part of the Green Guard platform, which offers free online content for building the skills to recognise and question greenwashing.

Alongside the course there is a knowledge check, which lets learners test their grasp of the main subjects. It focuses on the language, the tactics and the regulation surrounding misleading environmental claims, and is available in several languages, including English, German, Croatian, Italian and Portuguese.

The eLearning is especially useful for young people, youth workers, educators and civil society organisations, but also for anyone who wants to recognise manipulative environmental messages with more confidence and make better-informed decisions. The content is practical, accessible and suited to learning at your own pace, which makes it a useful tool for individual study, for workshops, for training, and for activities focused on sustainability.

We invite you to explore the Green Guard eLearning, start the course and take the knowledge check in whichever language suits you best.
